The Inspiration:

"Kainaliu Kahakai" is a place name for the area that inspired this piece. One of my best friends is from Kainaliu, Kona. In high school, we used to surf Kona side with his dad. We had an annual beach camping trip that we would do with his 'ohana. We would stay down on the sand for a week, surfing, cruising, hiking, picking 'opihi, and trying to catch 'a'ama crabs on the rocks. After having kids, I've been drawn to my childhood memories and recreating those as an adult, selfishly for my kids to have the same experiences.
